Pinedale, WY

Pinedale, Wyoming, is nestled in a high alpine valley at 7,175 feet, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Wind River Range, the Wyoming Range, and the Gros Ventre Mountains. As a gateway to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Pinedale is perfectly situated for a myriad of outdoor adventures, with the Bridger-Teton National Forest offering a playground of activities and a stunning landscape teeming with wildlife. It's clear why we proudly call Pinedale 'The Real Wyoming'—this place is as captivating as it is inviting.

Pinedale's history is steeped in exploration and western settlement. The area was a pivotal site during the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade era of the early 1800s. Early explorers, trappers, and traders who settled in the Green River Valley eventually gave way to ranching, with the Green River Drift becoming the nation’s oldest and longest cattle drive. This historic cattle drive is so significant that it was the first ranching-related Traditional Cultural Property listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Wildlife enthusiasts will be thrilled by Pinedale’s surroundings, where the population of wildlife outnumbers residents ten-fold. The rugged landscapes of the Wind River, Wyoming, and Gros Ventre mountain ranges host an array of species from moose and mule deer to grizzly bears and gray wolves. Located on the Path of the Pronghorn, one of the last remaining long-distance animal migrations in the Western Hemisphere, Pinedale offers unique opportunities to observe these majestic animals, including pronghorn, safely crossing specially designed migration overpasses west of town.

The Wind River Range is a treasure trove of natural beauty, with thousands of alpine lakes and deep valleys carved by glaciers. Many of these pristine lakes are accessible only by hiking, offering solitude and breathtaking high-altitude vistas. Several large glacial-fed lakes near Pinedale, Fremont Lake being the largest and deepest of them, are popular among watersports enthusiasts, fishermen, beach-goers, and anyone looking to soak in the stunning views.

Pinedale's vibrant community life is further enriched by its local events and attractions. The Museum of the Mountain Man provides an in-depth look into the area's fur trading history, while the Pinedale Aquatic Center offers pools, a climbing wall, and a full gym for recreation and fitness. The Rendezvous Meadows Golf Course and Sublette County Ice Arena cater to sports enthusiasts with opportunities for golf and ice skating respectively.

Adding to Pinedale's charm is its bustling calendar of events. The annual Pinedale Fine Arts Council’s Soundcheck Music Series brings live music to the community, featuring a variety of genres and drawing visitors from all over most weekends throughout the summer months. The Pinedale Rodeo, held every summer, showcases the best of local rodeo talent and offers a true taste of western culture. Additionally, the town hosts the Winter Carnival and the local Farmers Market, both of which provide a lively atmosphere for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Pinedale’s summer calendar is highlighted by the Green River Rendezvous, a spectacular weekend event held the second weekend in July that immerses visitors in the rich history of the American West. This lively festival celebrates the era of the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade with a series of engaging activities, including reenactments of fur trader rendezvous, period-correct costumes, and traditional competitions. Attendees can enjoy a variety of events, such as the famous fur trade encampments, where they can interact with reenactors portraying traders, trappers, and Native Americans. The festival also features live music, a parade, craft vendors, and educational demonstrations. The Green River Rendezvous offers a vibrant glimpse into Pinedale’s past, making it a highlight of the year and a must-experience event for history enthusiasts and families alike.
